<FEATURE: Real Internet Love Scam Stories from scamalert.sg>
.
REMINDER:
- Always be wary when befriending strangers online and especially over dating apps
- Never fall for strangers sweet words too easily
- Never give away your mobile number too quickly
- Never give away your home address
- Never give away your money
- Never give away your personal and financial details
.
- Be suspicious when strangers:
* Boast about their "success" and "status" stories
* Are seemingly too kind or generous towards you
* Start confessing their love too soon
* Start telling sympathy stories
* Start telling problems they are facing - that require your help that involves money
* Start making excuses or show a change towards negative behaviour (& manipulative) when you demand proof / evidence
* Persuade you to take up investments
(Note from COP Community Admin: We are suspecting potential social engineering attacks, i.e. using scam/ fraudulent/ fake investment platforms that are NOT licensed/ registered/ regulated to 'steal' money from victims)

Story 1:
I LOST OVER $30K TO INTERNET LOVE SCAM
Anonymous | 16 Oct 2020

Internet Love Scam
It started with him liking me on coffee meets bagel in mid may and he asked to move to whatspp the next day. he claimed to be an only child, widower, canadian born with s'porean parents, now a PR. He stays at Bishan, works in oil & gas and drives a mercedes c400.

We conversed and text as much as four times daily throughout the 4 month experience. he serenaded to me and even sent me song lists, music and video links. I requested for video chat but he claimed his phone screen was broken. i insisted but all i saw was a black screen which he probably covered up the camera although he could see me.

He claimed to have flown to turkey in early June after passing a covid19 test. soon after he had a lot of problems from a fire causing injuries to workers who required hospitalisation, machines were damaged and he had malaria. due to being offshore, he claimed difficulty transferring funds from his offshore bank account at the oil rig so he provided me access to his account. after helping him with 2 transactions, his account was frozen and he started asking for money including money to seek treatment!

I transferred usd33,000 over 4 transactions to a foreign account and 2 local accounts over that period. the final straw was when he requested for help to pay resident tax to his bank, i found out he wasn't at the quarantine hotel where he claimed to be and the bank contact details he provided were fake. i sought legal advice and reported to the police.

I subsequently found that his phone line was perpetually on airplane mode. the bank website was a fake and the photos of his profile were taken from an instagram account of an american asian.

I felt emotionally betrayed by a very skilful and experienced scammer and it was a bitter lesson.

Story 2:
ONLINE FRIEND ASKED FOR FINANCIAL AID TO HELP HIM TIDE OVER HIS PROBLEM
Anonymous | 28 Sep 2020
Internet Love Scam
I connected with this guy who goes by the name ‘Keat chang’ on the cmb app. WitHin an hour of chatting, he asked that we moved our chat to whatsapp and also that we both exit the dating app. He claimed that he spoke to two other ladies before on the app but since theY both have found ‘the one’, they have exited the app. He said he’s a singaporean who just Returned from uk to Sg three years ago. Lived and studied in uk fOr most of his life. He has a mum in sG and only child. Also cLAimS that his ex-GF chEated on him with his best frIend.

Red flags that this person is a scammer:-
- Professed his undying love wIthin days
-- texting regularly every day with frequent updates
- left for a work trip within two days of chatting
- claimed to be doing his own oil and gas biZ and this is his first project in uzbekistAn
- asked for personal details regarding job and family

- The final straw: Asked for a a favour as his machine that he bought broke down and he needed cash to help. Needed to transfer money from his online account to the supplier (The catch: he’s on an oil rig which would limit access to his online account and therefore need needed you to help do the transfer first).
- Pleaded for your help

Do this Instead:
- just Say no
- Block him immediately
- flag Him on the dating app

I learnt a precious lesson that took all of three weeks...trust your instincts. True love doesn't require money!

Story 3:
ONLINE FRIEND WHO "SHOWERED ME WITH LOVE" TURNED OUT TO BE A SCAMMER
Anonymous | 22 Sep 2020

Internet Love Scam
I accepted a follow request on Instagram. The account username is 1882_jo. His name is alex kim jong-ho. He started chatting with me on 21 june. He said that he is a 29-year-old korean working in london as a subsea inspector with bv oil company. After that, he was busy and seldom on instagram, so he requested to shift to whatsapp to chat on 6 august. He used a business account. He confessed his love for me on 10 august. He chatted with me every day and called me honey and dear. He even said that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. We sent each other photos and audio recordings. I fell in love with him too. He called me 4 times on the phone. I asked for a video call but he said he was shy. On 13 september, he said that he was done with his work and could not chat on whatsapp anymore. We shifted to google hangouts. On 21 september, he asked me to open a trading account to start investing for our future. I told him that i was not interested. He said that i yelled at him. Then he called me on 22 september. His voice was different from the one that i heard previously. He still claimed that his voice changed because he was stressed. I pointed out to him that it was not possible and he quickly hung up. He sounded like a Caucasian and older. The one that called me at whatsapp sounded asian and boyish. I did a google reverse image search before with the photos that he sent me but there was no result. I just want to warn everyone that there are people operating as a syndicate preying on their victims' emotions and intending to scam money eventually. Their acting was superb. They showered me with love and concern. I didn't lose any money but i was scammed of my feelings and time.
