The assault or use of criminal force to a person with intent to outrage modesty.

Ref: Section 354 of the Penal Code (Singapore)

The Outrage of Modesty or Molestation, is a terrifying and traumatizing experience for the victims.

This is a preventable crime. Learn how to avoid becoming a victim of such crime.

AT PUBLIC PLACES

« Never take short cuts through dark and deserted places.

« Walk in well-lit paths and areas at night, where there are human traffic.

« Never jog in secluded areas, or have a jogging buddy to accompany you.

« Always be alert and attentive to the surroundings (including crowded venues). Avoid looking at the mobile phone.

« Avoid going out at night alone. If you have to, go out in a group or get someone trusted to accompany you.


« 
When returning home late at night, arrange to be escorted from a safe place, (i.e. bus stop, carpark or lift lobby) by a family member or someone trusted.


« Carry a shrill alarm to scare off the culprit or shout for passers-by attention.

« If being followed, stay calm and walk towards a high human traffic area or call the Police for help. If possible, observe the suspect's appearance, attire, height, or any distinctive physical features.

« If you are molested, shout immediately for help from those around you. This is to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit early. Stay calm and observe the suspect's appearance, attire, height, or any distinctive physical features; as well as the direction the suspect went.


ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

«  Always be alert and attentive to the surroundings. Avoid sleeping or looking at the mobile phone.

« Where possible, move away if someone stands or sits exceptionally close to you.

« Alert passengers, driver or station master if someone is behaving inappropriately.

« If you are molested, shout immediately for help from those around you. This is to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit early. Stay calm and observe the suspect's appearance, attire, height, or any distinctive physical features; as well as the direction the suspect went.


WHEN TAKING THE LIFT TO GO HOME

«  Avoid looking the at mobile phone and stay alert of your surroundings.

«  Avoid entering lifts with a stranger. Let the stranger take the lift and wait for the next one.

« When entering the lift alone, stay close to the lift button panel. Press “Door Open” and step out immediately if a stranger rushes in as the lift door is closing.

« Carry a shrill alarm to scare off the culprit or shout for passers-by attention.


« If you are molested, stay calm and observe the suspect's appearance, attire, height, or any distinctive physical features; as well as the direction the suspect went. Call the police for assistance.


WHEN AT HOME

«  When home alone, secure your home and avoid interaction with any strangers at the door.

«  If home has such perpetrators, speak to a close and trusted family member and lodge a police report ASAP.


FOR CHILDREN

« Young children should be accompanied home at all times. Ensure that young ones do not wander in public places alone without adult supervision.

« Teach them to be wary and move away from strangers who try to get close to or touch them.

« Educate mature children on avoiding interaction with, and accepting anything from strangers both online and offline.


ADDITIONAL TIPS

«  Consider taking up basic self-defence course to fend a surprise attack.

« Never accept meetup invitations, rides or presents from strangers online and offline



Call Police for assistance if you are a witness or if you are victim of such crimes.  Do it from a safe distance and/ or location.
